The Lakewood Community News is published by the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce. “Lakewood Business,” the official publication of the Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, was first published in newsletter format in the early 80’s and mailed to 300 subscribers. The tabloid format currently used was first introduced in 1984 when the Chamber offices moved to 5445 E. Del Amo Blvd. in Lakewood.
The newspaper’s name was changed in October of 1986 from “Lakewood Business” to “Lakewood Community News.” Circulation was expanded in 2000 to its current figure of 57,000, including the areas of Lakewood, Lakewood Village, Lakewood Plaza, Hawaiian Gardens, and portions of Long Beach and Cerritos.
In its early days, the newspaper was put together by volunteers and without the use of personal computers. Many Lakewood Chamber members recall pulling “all-nighters” readying the newspaper for publication. Today, the paper is assembled electronically, printed, and delivered house-to-house by a distribution company. Outside the office of the Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce on Del Amo Blvd, residents can pick up the latest copy of the newspaper in our red newsstand. There are also 50 businesses in the Greater Lakewood area where the newspaper can be obtained.
Today the newspaper is published out of its current location at 4010 Watson Plaza Drive, in Lakewood and serves as a community newspaper and a voice for the small business members of the Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce.
